IIUI Students Visit Agricultural Farm to Study Water Conservation Techniques
Under the supervision of Dr. Pervez Zamurrad Janjua, Foreign Professor, and with the coordination of Mr. Jawad Ahmad Azeez, Program Coordinator, the students of MS Rural Development of International Institute of Islamic Economics, International Islamic University Islamabad, visited Mian Khan Agricultural Farm in Chakri on 25th April 2010. The purpose of this study tour was to acquire applied knowledge about the modern water conservation techniques and to assess the differential of agricultural output between traditional rain-fed and modern drip irrigation system.

Mian Khan Agricultural Farm is managed by Mr. Iftikhar Ahmad, a student of MS Rural Development (IIUI). Soon after completing coursework he applied his theoretical knowledge in his own farm and converted about half of his farm land into drip irrigation system. Traditionally, farm was irrigated through rain water and water pump. Land levelling was a big problem associated with huge costs. A citrus garden was irrigated with this water through water routes and in this way a significant quantity of water was lost through seepage as well as evaporation, and often tail areas of the garden remain without water. Mr. Iftikhar Ahmad managed to lift water from Sowan River adjacent to his land with the help of a Water Pump driven through the diesel power of a tractor and the water is brought to a water tank. Here again water is lifted through a sucking pump and passed through a filter plant. Thereafter, water is supplied to different tracks of land with the help of water pipes. From here on two different techniques are used to irrigate land. First, water gun is used to spray water to a track having an area of approximately 180 meters radius. Second, water is supplied to individual plants through drip irrigation tubes and devices.

According to the observations of the students of MS Rural Development the level of per acre output in drip and water gun fed area is many times greater than the level of output in traditional rain-fed area. In the opinion of the students the application of modern water conservation techniques in Potohar region can increase the income of the farmers as well as the supply of basic food to the benefit of the consumers. Therefore, with the help of existing subsidy on behalf of the government it is recommended to apply the modern water conservation techniques to increase the farm productivity.
