INTRODUCTION
Realizing the growing and inevitable importance of English as a global language of communication, business, commerce and politics, International Islamic University (IIU) Islamabad established the Center for Language Teaching (CLT) March 2008. One of the main objectives attached to initiating this centre is to develop and produce task oriented graduates, who should be proficient in English to comply with the challenges both within the university and out in the market too.
The Center for Language Teaching at IIUI offers two tracks of English language programmes: track one includes special English preparatory courses such as IELTS, TOEFL, GRE, GMAT, GAT etc designed for those seeking to qualify for foreign and indigenous universities admission or for availing job opportunities abroad and to qualify for HEC’s scholarships; track two focuses on the English proficiency programmes specially designed for working professionals, students with low English proficiency level, researchers and anyone seeking to improve his/her English language skills.

How do you know your level of English?
All our English courses require a placement test which will tell us the actual level of each applicant and will ultimately determine the acceptance to the programme. The placement test is administered before the commencement of the proper classes of the programme through standardized written and oral tests.   1. English Language Course (Basic to Advanced Level)
  • Our Basic Level is for the students who aspire to have a starter of English which allows them to everyday situations contextualized with English. By the end of this level our students should be proficient in: understanding and using simple everyday expressions and basic phrases and clauses aimed at meeting their simple academic and professional needs; introducing themselves and others; asking and answering questions about familiar issues such as personal preferences, local places of residence, acquaintances; writing grammatically correct language; and participating in a conversation in English with an encouraging environment.
  • Our Intermediate Level is for those students who have already learnt the basics of English language and want to enhance further their English proficiency by being able to understand and express information, thoughts, feelings, views, beliefs and common phrases and simple clauses about familiar everyday situations in straightforward
    spoken and written discourse. By the end of this level the students are expected to be proficient in: understanding sentences and frequently used expressions from the areas of most direct relevance (e.g. basic personal and kinship information, shopping, indigenous geography, employment, etc); communicating in simple English conversations requiring a simple and direct exchange of information; accomplishing routine tasks about familiar matters; describing in simple terms aspects of their background, immediate environment and matters from the areas of immediate interest; and writing grammatically correct and structurally sound language.
  • Our Advanced Level is for the students who have already learnt the intermediate level skills and want to acquire an advanced proficiency in English to use it for their academic or professional life. By the end of this level, the students should be proficient in: understanding familiar matters frequently encountered at work, college, university, etc; dealing with the situations likely to crop up while living in an area where the English language is used; producing grammatically accurate, structurally complex but well-linked, and thematically dense discourse; describing experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions; and giving reasons and explanations for opinions, arguments and plans.

Objective

This course is designed to help the students learn effective communication by developing in them both written and oral skills of communication, they need to be successful in their professional lives. To make the students familiar with the real life communication issues, personal interviews with business associates and academics other than the theoretical discussions will be the hallmark of this course.

Objective

IELTS is International English Language Testing System. The test designed by IELTS is considered to be one of the most standardized tools of measuring the ability of a person to communicate in English proficiently. It is meant for the people who intend to work or study in a country where English is the medium of communication. The educational institutes, employers and the governments of all the English speaking countries require all the concerned non-native persons to take IELTS. TOEFL, the test of English as a Foreign Language evaluates the proficiency of an individual to use and understand academic English at a college or university level. Colleges and universities of many English speaking countries require non-native applicants to take TOEFL. IELTS & TOEFL preparatory classes at ELC focus on the followings:

and analytical abilities of their applicants. GAT (Graduate Assessment Test) is an essential requirement for MS/MPhil in Pakistan. The same is a prerequisite for the coveted indigenous and foreign scholarships by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan.

Words are simply the dresses to our thoughts and emotions and Creative Writing is anything where the purpose is to express thoughts, feelings and emotions rather than to simply convey information. The term creative writing is used to discern certain types of inventive or artistic writing from other general types of writing. Generally, creative writing is associated with different genres of literature and certainly literature, apart from being an expression of emotions, can be defined as an idealized, intensified and above all an artistic expression of life. This kind of writing obviously depends upon creative thinking, for, the unusual way of exploiting the words to bring literariness earnestly demands proper training, and an
encouraging academic atmosphere.

Objective

One of the characteristics of a successful legal practitioner is being convincing not just in verbal but in non-verbal communication too. To be convincing in the field of law, one needs to be communicative, expressive, argumentative, analytical, critical and creative at the same time. They have to use language with particular care and precision. Mistakes are most undesirable at this level. This course meets these specific needs. Law students currently perusing their studies can also improve their skills and work to become better professionals in future. This course is designed with an intention to improve the language skills of those Pakistani lawyers who do not have rich English background and hence suffer whenever it is time to communicate in English. The course also aims to sharpen thinking and creative skills of the participants which are imperative for effective and swift communication. Academic writing is a genre of writing usually adopted by a research scholar when the assumed audience also comprises scholars. This type of writing is mostly based on research, and is complex, dense, formal, linear, objective and precise. The writers of research articles, papers, dissertations, theses, books, etc are required to use it in their works. The postgraduate researchers, at times, encounter a disparaging trouble when they are at the writing stage of their research process. Many of their well-researched projects are not published in the prestigious journals of their relevant fields just because of using a non-academic language. ELC has the honour and privilege of introducing a short course on Academic Writing for the first time in Pakistan.
