Further, he noted that while these platforms can handle simple cases of Islamic inheritance law, they often fail in complex scenarios, like the issue known as Himārīya, primarily because they depend heavily on internet-based data rather than authoritative legal sources. He also raised concerns about the occasional fabrication of references and unreliable estimations by these AI platforms. He noted that such limitations imply that generative AI can and should not be relied upon in sensitive areas like Islamic Law without human expert verification.

In the subsequent discussion, Dr. Mirza Omer Beg offered an in-depth overview of the technical evolution of AI platforms, highlighting key players such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta. He pointed out that these platforms are aligned with the data and policies of their parent companies, and hence, their responses may reflect corporate alignment. Dr. Beg also identified potential risks and ethical concerns associated with future developments in AI, urging scholars and policymakers to remain vigilant.

The session concluded with a lively question-and-answer segment, where students and faculty engaged with the speakers, raising critical queries about AI’s use, reliability, and future in Islamic legal contexts.

Prof. Dr. Akram thanked the speakers for their valuable contributions and expressed hope that this lecture series would continue to inspire meaningful discourse at the intersection of technology and Islamic law.

IIUI, Chinese Biotechnology Delegation Explore Strategic Collaboration in Medical Innovation, Research Commercialization, and Local Manufacturing
April 14th, 2025

A high-level Chinese delegation comprising senior executives and leading scientists from renowned biotechnology, medical equipment, and pharmaceutical companies visited the International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI), to explore long-term collaboration in biotechnology, diagnostics, medical equipment manufacturing, vocational training, and research commercialization.

Reflecting the shared commitment of Pakistan and China to advancing educational and technological diplomacy, the visit aligns with Pakistan’s Vision 2025 and China’s innovation-driven global outreach strategies.

The delegation included representatives from China Medical City’s CPEC Medical Development and Research Office, Guangzhou Youdi Testing Kits Manufacture Co., Zhongshan Medical Manufacture Co., Yao Hai Medical Co., and the China People’s Reforming Party, Shanghai.

In their meeting with IIUI’s leadership — Rector Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed and President Dr. Ahmed Shuja Syed — the Chinese experts proposed the establishment of a joint facility for the production of medical diagnostic kits, particularly for diseases such as Hepatitis C and HIV/AIDS. The proposal envisions technology transfer, local manufacturing under the theme “Made in Pakistan with Chinese Innovation”, and the establishment of a dedicated biotechnology laboratory within IIUI’s emerging Science and Technology Innovation Zone.

Rector IIUI praised China’s leadership in technology and innovation and expressed optimism that this partnership would open new avenues for knowledge-sharing, capacity building, and joint ventures between IIUI and leading Chinese industries.

President IIUI emphasized that the university’s Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC), International Linkages Office, and Science and Technology spaces were well-positioned to facilitate this collaboration. He reiterated IIUI’s commitment to meaningful research translation where ideas move beyond academic publication to tangible products and solutions for society.

Discussions also explored the formation of joint research teams, product incubation, patent registration, and vocational training programs to equip Pakistani youth with biotech skills aligned with future industry needs. President IIUI further proposed that IIUI could serve as a host platform for research labs, youth training centres, and regional vocational campuses in Lahore and Peshawar to support the growing biotech ecosystem in Pakistan.

The Chinese delegation expressed appreciation for IIUI’s research infrastructure and identified the university as a promising strategic partner in advancing health technologies within the broader China-Pakistan cooperation framework.

It was mutually agreed that a pilot project for diagnostic kits production will be initiated, collaborative research teams will be formed, a business incubation facility will be developed at IIUI, and regulatory alignment will be ensured with DRAP (Pakistan) and relevant Chinese authorities. Dual product registration mechanisms will also be explored for Pakistan and China, while joint research centers will be established to foster sustained scientific collaboration.

Importantly, both sides agreed that once the operational frameworks are finalized and formal MoUs are signed, the Government of Pakistan will also be taken on board. This will help further strengthen the production, dissemination, and policy-level support for the collaborative technologies being developed. It is envisioned that this multi-stakeholder engagement — involving academia, industry, and government — will accelerate innovation and improve healthcare outcomes in the region.

Another key highlight of the meeting was the proposal that patents already reaching maturity in China could have their application patents made available in Pakistan. This strategic sharing of intellectual property would enable faster adaptation and localization of cutting-edge biotech products in the Pakistani market.

A working group will be constituted to prepare detailed action plans and implementation roadmaps, with phased activities expected to commence in the latter half of 2025.

The meeting was also attended by Professor Dr. Muhammad Riaz from SA-CIRBS, who served as the meeting coordinator.

IIUI Hosts First Alumni Eid Milan Brunch at New Campus to Strengthen Graduate Engagement
April 12th, 2025

The International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) organized its first Alumni Eid Milan Brunch at the H-10 new campus, aiming to strengthen institutional ties with its graduates and to apprise them of recent academic and administrative developments.

The event was coordinated by the university’s Alumni Office and took place simultaneously at both the male and female campuses, following a structured program designed to engage alumni in institutional discourse.

The event commenced with a plantation drive in which alumni participated. Notably, Dr. Sajida Ahmed Chauhdry, Additional District & Sessions Judge, Lahore, has contributed 300 trees to IIUI as a gesture of goodwill, supplementing the university’s plantation drive and reinforcing the alumni’s commitment to the university’s green initiatives  spearheaded by its horticulture section.

At the Female Campus, the inauguration ceremony was addressed by Prof. Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed. Speaking on the occasion, he emphasized that IIUI is a sacred trust (amaanat) for all its stakeholders — a space that must be protected, strengthened, and cherished by everyone associated with it. He stressed that the university is not merely an educational institution but a legacy, whose foundations must be fortified against any attempts to undermine its integrity, values, and standing.

Prof. Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed further noted that alumni occupy a vital role in this endeavour, serving as both ambassadors and vigilant custodians of their alma mater. He remarked that alumni act as watchdogs — able to identify gaps within the system, highlight concerns, and contribute actively to institutional reform and development. Welcoming them back to IIUI, he expressed hope that this reunion would not be a solitary event but the first of many such engagements in the future — fostering a culture of collaboration, feedback, and mutual growth.

Meanwhile, President IIUI, Dr. Ahmed Shuja Syed, in his welcome address described the alumni brunch as a “curtain raiser” for a renewed mission and vision of the university. He said the event signifies the beginning of a broader effort to strengthen team building and reshape the university’s direction.

Reaffirming the significance of IIUI’s identity, Dr. Ahmed Shuja Syed said, “IIUI has an identity, and it reflects in practical life.  He said its renaissance and this reconnect are essential to restore our mission.” He termed the alumni as “shining stars” in their respective fields and appreciated their contributions in internships, projects, and endowments. “This muster gives us a glimpse of their societal impact,” he added, while assuring that there will be no compromise on IIUI’s identity.

Vice President (Female Campus) Dr. Amna Mehmood said the alumni get-together was encouraging and served as a valuable opportunity for the alumni fraternity to reminisce about their student life. She noted that this connection-building activity would prove even more beneficial in the longer run.

Class representatives from various academic sessions introduced themselves and shared proposals regarding alumni engagement, professional collaboration, and academic contributions. The alumni shared their professional journeys and suggestions for university development over brunch, followed by photography sessions and informal networking.

Among the distinguished alumni who attended the event were Dr. Sajida Ahmed Chauhdry, Additional District & Sessions Judge, Lahore, and Ms. Huma Akhtar Chughtai, Governance and Gender Specialist and Member National Assembly of Pakistan. The event also drew prominent professionals such as Jabbar Karmi, Executive Director, ZTBL; Wing Commander Arshad Hussain, GM Cargo, Shaheen Air Services, Peshawar Airport; Faredullah, Director Education, Peshawar; Muhammad Ramzan Khan, Legal Advisor, IIUI; legal experts Shahid Iqbal Janjua and Mazhar Iqbal; Syed Mansoor Shakeel, CEO, Character Education Foundation; Hafiz Rehmatullah, Secretary, AJK; Hafiz Qamur al Zaman; Ms. Syeda Fouzia Jalaal Shah, Director, Law & Legal Research Wing, Council of Islamic Ideology; Ms. Raheela Jabeen, Ex-Warden, IIUI; Ms. Zubaida Khatoon, Ex-Director Admissions & Exams, IIUI.

The university reported participation from alumni currently serving in various national and international sectors including business, public administration, law, information technology, social services, and politics. The event served as the beginning of a structured effort to institutionalize alumni relations and integrate graduate feedback into future academic planning.
