US Ambassador Visits Faisal Mosque along with his Wife
Mr. Cameron Munter, Ambassador of United States of America (USA) visited the Faisal Mosque, Islamabad along with his wife Mrs. Marilyn Wyatt and high officials of US Embassy in Pakistan. They were received by Mrs. Parveen Qadir Agha Vice President International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI), Sahibzada Sajid ur Rehman Director Dawah Academy IIUI along with deans and directors of various faculties and institutes of the university.

Those who were present on the occasion included Dr. Mumtaz Ahmed Director Iqbal International Institute for Research and Dialogue (IRD), IIUI, Dr. Zia-ul-Haq Dean Faculty of Shariah & Law, IIUI, Dr. Ahmed Shujah Dean Faculty of Engineering and Technology, IIUI and others.

American Envoy inquired about Faisal Mosque and expressed his keen interest in Islamic Teachings, Islamic Center and Dawah Academy as well as the Islamic University. They appreciated the architecture of this mosque which reflects the great Islamic Art and especially the reflection of its international color. He also watched a huge copy of the Holy Quran displayed by the Mosque’s administration. In the end of this visit they were presented Dawah Academy Crest and a set of Dawah Academy publications.

LHC Dismisses Writ Petition of Dr. M. Irfan Khan
Mr. Justice Sagheer Ahmed Qadri, Judge of the Lahore High Court (LHC), Rawalpindi Bench, Rawalpindi has dismissed two writ petitions filed by Dr. Muhammad Irfan Khan, terminated Professor of the Environmental Science, International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI). The services of the Professor who was on probation has been dispensed with on account of negligence and lack of professional performance. Dr. Muhammad Irfan Khan had obtained a stay order and filed a writ petition for his restoration but the learned court dismissed his applications terming them as malafide and without any strong reason. Mr. Rehan ud din Khan Golravi, Advocate pleaded IIUI in the Court.
SPECIAL LECTURE ON ENERGY RESEARCH AT INTERNATIONAL ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY, ISLAMABAD
Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Faculty of Basic & Applied Sciences and National Centre for Physics are jointly organizing a special lecture on "Opportunities with Photo Sciences for Energy Research" on November 2, 2010 at Auditorium Complex, Faisal Mosque Campus, International Islamic University, Islamabad. The guest speaker is Prof. Dr.Zahid Hussain from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, California, USA, who is holding a management position of Division Deputy at Berkeley Labs as well as Adjunct Professorship at Stanford University, USA. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Shuja Syed, Dean Faculty of Engineering and Technology is hosting his visit, who also happens to be his collaborator on scientific research. The linkage between the two institutions has recently been established through the institutional support extended by Higher Education Commission Pakistan.
IUII hosts Akhtar Hamid Khan Memorial Lecture Speakers stress upon need of Integrated Support for poor
The International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) hosted a lecture in memory of Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan. The lecture was organized by Akhtar Hameed Khan Resource Center (AHKRC) in collaboration with Rural Support Program network Pakistan (RSPN). Begum Akhtar Hameed Khan was the chief guest on the occasion while Dr. Anwar Hussain Siddiqui President IIUI was the guest of honour.

Mr. Shoaib Sultan Khan Chairperson RSPN, in his welcome note shed some light of life and work of Akhtar Hameed Khan for his efforts for rural development. Mr. Khan said that of all the many outstanding personalities with whom I have worked, Akhtar Hameed Khan was one of the most impressive. He combined sensitivity and dedication to the light of the common man with the profound vision of a poet-philosopher.

Fayyaz Baqir Director AHKRC Introduced keynote speaker Mr. Mahmood Hasan Khan, Prof. Emeritus, Simon Fraser University, Canada. Mr. Hassan said Akhtar Hameed Khan blended the considerable administrative skills of the elite Civil Service with the insights of an applied social scientist and historian… His Scandinavian colleagues and other advisors had nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize. He said that Progress (social and economic) should be a continuous change. At its root poverty means deprivation and it can become Trans-generational trap and rural poor suffers more than the urban poor.

Guest of Honour Dr. Anwar Hussain Siddiqui, President IIUI said that it was a privilege to attend a ceremony commemorating a great rural development practitioner. He thanked Dr. Hasan, AHKRC and NIRM for conducting such a thought provoking event.

Mrs. Akhtar Hameed Khan said that Mr. Hameed till the very end loved working for the poor and wanted to stay with them. The book “Islands of Hope” was also Launched during the ceremony. The book contains many interesting recollection of Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan. Dr. Nazar-ul-Islam and Mr. Pervez Tahir presented their review on “Islands of hope.” Two books were announced for Akhtar Hameed Khan Memorial Book Award. Funding for this award (Rs. 50,000/-) was provided by National Rural Support Programme (NRSP) and the book nominations were received, reviewed and selected for awards by Council of Social Sciences (COSS).

IIUI holds seminar on Islamic Banking
The International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) and State Bank of Pakistan jointly organized a seminar on “Islamic Banking and Finance in Pakistan: Issues, Challenges and way Forward” at the Faisal Mosque Campus of the university to create awareness and remove misconceptions.

Prof. Fateh Muhammad Malik Rector IIU chaired the seminar. Dr. Munawar Iqbal, renowned Islamic Banking Scholar and Former Chief Research, IRTI, Islamic Development Bank, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Mr. Saleem Ullah, Director Islamic Banking Department State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), Mr. Ahmed Siddiqui, Head product Development and Shariah Compliance, Meezan Bank Limited, Mr. Sajjad Majid Khan, Area Manager North, Habib Bank Limited (Islamic Banking), Mr. Khaliq-uz-Zaman, Consultant, Islamic Banking and Finance (IBF), IIUI, Mr. Azeem Pirani Regional Manager, Pak-Qatar Takaful Limited also addressed the seminar. Teachers, Administrative Officers, Employees and a large number of students attended the opening session of the seminar.

Professor Fateh Muhammad Malik Rector IIUI in his inaugural address said that Islamic banking based on interest free transactions which is a great bless for humanity at large. He said that the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAWS) gave this economic model to the humanity which is a hallmark of Islam. Prof. Fateh Malik added that it was need of the hour to implement Islamic Banking Model in letter and spirit. He also quoted some verses of Allama Iqbal in which he has condemned exploitation based economic system given by western capitalist system.

Dr. Munawar Iqbal in his key note speech said that the world is thirsty of interest free economy and the present day Islamic Banking is a response to that need. He added that it is very encouraging that the Islamic Banking System is getting momentum not only in the Muslim world but in other parts of the world as well. He admitted that the Islamic Banking System is not progressing rapidly as the interest based banking system is doing but at the same time the Islamic Banking System is considered as an alternative model for day to day business.

Other experts were also of the view that the Islamic Banking System must be adopted in its totality. They added that partial implementation of the Islamic Banking System may harm the whole concept.

IIUI Remembers 20th October Bomb blasts victims
The International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) is organizing two separate functions at its Male & Female campuses on 20th October to remember twin bomb blasts victims of IIUI campus last year. It is worth mentioning that two male (Hafiz Nafees Anjum & Hafiz Khalil ur Rehman), Six female students (Amna Tahir, Amna Batool, Tayyaba Hina, Aqsa Malik, Hina Nawaz & Sidra Khalid) and one employee (Parvez Masih) lost their lives due to those blasts which also injured scores of others.
IIUI Student Attends Summer School at Erfurt University
Shakoor Alam, a student of M.Phil in Comparative Religion of the International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) attended Summer School at Erfurt University in Germany recently. He was selected among the fifteen young scholars of the world to participate in the Summer School on “Muslims in the West” at Erfurt University, Germany. During the program the participants visited the Holocaust Memorial, Erfurt City, and three days trip in Berlin. Where they were taken to the German Parliament, Human Rights Commission of European Union and the Islamic Center in Berlin. Also they visited the beautiful Umer Bin Khattab mosque. He also presented a paper on Intercultural Communication –Problems and Challenges. Students from India, Bangladesh, Morocco, Iran, Egypt, Turkey, Bosnia, Kyrgyzstan and the host country participated in this summer school.
HEC Approves IIUI Data Project
The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has approved a research project, “Autonomic Workload Manager for Data Warehouse” of Department of computer science, International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) of amount Rs.4.48 million under National Research Programme of University (NRPU) in 2010. The research project was submitted by Professor Dr. Muhammad Sher, Chairman Department of Computer Science IIUI. Mr. Basit Raza and Mr. Abdul Mateen, PhD Computer Science students are working on this project.

The grant will be spent on the development of research infrastructure at IIUI and salaries for researchers and developers. The objective of Autonomic Workload Manager (AWM) is to manage the workload of data warehouse in an efficient and responsive way. This project will be helpful in research and provide learning opportunities to MS and PhD Computer Science students of IIUI. This project will also be helpful for boosting the research and technology in the area of computer science in Pakistan. The duration of this research project is two years.

Two Day Conference on Moderation ends at IIUI
Adopts Islamabad declaration to Support Pakistan

Two days International Conference on Moderation ended here at the International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI). The conference was organized in collaboration with the International Moderation Forum, Jordan. Engineer Marwan Al-Fouri, Secretary General, International Moderation Forum, Jordan, Dr. Muhammad Habash, Member Parliament, Republic of Syria, Dr. Abuov Aydar, Director, International Centre of Cultures and Religions, Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Prof. Fateh Muhammad Malik Rector IIUI, Sahibzada Sajid-ur-Rehman, Director, Dawah Academy IIU and a number of Pakistani and foreign delegates addressed various sessions of the conference.

The conference adopted a declaration at the end of its deliberations. The declaration assured full cooperation of the moderate muslim world to Pakistan in its efforts to curb terrorism of any kind. The conference also appreciated the efforts of Pakistan for the well-being of the muslim ummah, the participants were of the view that Pakistan has all the capabilities to lead the muslim world in all spheres of life especially on strategic, civilizational, cultural and academic levels.

The conference also paid rich tributes to Pakistan’s founding fathers who versioned the strategic role of the country for other muslim nations. The conference also called for well planned actions against all sorts of terrorism and extremism. The islamabad declaration of the conference also called for strengthening cooperation among academic institution of the muslim Ummah.

In the end the conference appreciated and called for more actions for promotion of moderation, dialogue, understanding and objectivity. (Islamabad declaration concludes)

He urged upon Pakistanis to come forward and play their role in this regard. Dr. Muhammad Habash said that it was Allama Iqbal who awakened the muslim world but at the same time we need more thoughts from Iqbal. He quoted a number of verses of Iqbal in which the philosopher poet of the Muslim world has paved way for revival of the Ummah. Dr. Abuov Aydar said that Pakistan has distinction of having Iqbal as its national poet but at the same time the message of Iqbal was not limited to Pakistan. The Central Asian People get their light and ray of hope from Iqbal. Prof. Fateh Muhammad Malik on this occasion condemned hostile attitudes of west against Muslim world. He added that these attitudes create more hatred among minds of the Muslims. He condemned terrorist acts in the Muslim world but at the same time demanded change in the mind sets of the western world. Sahibzada Sajid-ur-Rehman and Dr. Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq also spoke on the occasion.

Assef Ahmed Ali Calls for Reinterpretation of Islam
Addresses 08th Convocation of IIUI
8th Convocation of the International Islamic University, Islamabad was held on Thursday. Sardar Assef Ahmed Ali Federal Minister for Education was the chief guest on the occasion. Professor Fateh Muhammad Malik Rector IIUI, Dr. Anwar Hussain Siddiqui President IIUI, Mrs. Parveen Qadir Agha, Vice President IIUI, Gulzar Ahmed Khawaja Director Academic Planning Cell, IIUI, all Deans, Directors, Administrative Officers, employees and a large number of students were also present on the occasion.

Speaking to the convocation ceremony Sardar Assef Ahmed Ali stressed upon the need of revival of “Ijtihad” to cater modern day requirements and needs of not only the Muslim world but whole the world as well. He said that Islam
is a religion of peace not for Muslims but other human beings as well. He acknowledged the role of “Madaris” but suggested some structural measures to make those Madaris more useful for the humanity at large. He congratulated the Islamic University for its achievements in last 25 years of its existence. He said that other educational institutions must follow the Islamic University and should make it as a role model.

Prof. Fateh Muhammad Malik spoke on goals and ideals of the university. He said that IIUI is a rapidly expanding institution in all branches of knowledge with a growing focus on Engineering, Science & Technology and Social Sciences after establishing excellence in the traditional fields of Arabic, Islamic Studies, Shariah and Islamic Economics.

Dr. Anwar Hussain Siddiqui President while speaking on the occasion presented a detailed report about the university especially on one year since last convocation. He said that the university during last 25 years has produced over 17000 (Seventeen thousand) students out of which 46 obtained PhDs. In last year the university produced 2389 students with 4 PhDs and 36 Gold Medalists.

Gulzar Ahmed Khawaja acted as moderator of the convocation. He told that the Faculty of Management Sciences was largest viz-a-viz graduates as it obtained 6 gold medalists (2 male, 4 female) out of 647 graduates. Faculty of Basic and Applied Sciences got 7 gold medals (2 male, 5 female) out of 397 graduates, Faculty of Shariah and Law got 6 gold medals (4 male, 2 female) out of 285 graduates, Faculty of Islamic Economics got 3 gold medals (3 female) out of 277 graduates, Faculty of Social Sciences got 6 gold medals (2 male, 4 female) out of 231 graduates, Faculty of Language, Literature and Humanity got one gold medal (1 female) out of 185 graduates, Faculty of Islamic Studies got 2 gold medals (1 male, 1 female) out of 149 graduates, Faculty of Engineering and Technology got 2 gold medals (2 male) out of 127 graduates, Faculty of Arabic 3 gold medals (1 male, 2 female) out of 91 graduates.

Conference on “The Role of Al-Wastia in the Progress & Stability of Pakistan” at IIUI Today

The International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) and International Al-Wastia Forum, Jordan are jointly arranging a conference on “The Role of Al-Wastia in the Progress & Stability of Pakistan”. The opening ceremony will be held on Friday 08th October 2010 at 10.30 a.m. at the Faisal Mosque Campus of the university. Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Syed Hamid Saeed Kazmi shall be chief guest on the occasion while Rector IIUI Professor Fateh Muhammad Malik shall preside over the opening session.

HONOUR FOR THE UNIVERSITY,
President IIUI amongst the 500 Most Influential Muslims

Prof. Dr. Anwar Hussain Siddiqui, President of the International Islamic University, Islamabad which is currently celebrating its Silver Jubilee, has been named amongst the 500 most influential Muslims of the year 2010 by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Center. This Centre is an independent research entity affiliated with the Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought. The Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought is an international Islamic non-governmental, independent institute headquartered in Amman, the capital of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The Center has published the third edition of its book entitled: “THE 500 MOST INFLUENTIAL MUSLIMS 2010”. This publication provides a window into the movers and shakers of the Muslim world. It highlights people who are influential as Muslims, that is, people whose influence is derived from their practice of Islam or from the fact that they are Muslim. It gives valuable insight into the different ways that Muslims impact the world, and also shows the diversity of how people are living as Muslims today.

Dr. Siddiqui’s association with the International Islamic University dates back to its founding years as he has been entrusted with several important and strategic assignments from time to time during the past 25 years because of which the University has expanded in many directions: whether by way of setting up of academic Departments, introduction of qualified Faculty, growth of the University budget, growth of infrastructure and all resulting in the growth in the enrollment of students, thus bringing it to the position of the 3rd largest Public Sector University of the country.

IIUI Distributes relief at DIKhan & Bakkhar

The International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) distributed relief at Basti Ali and Basti Dhakki of Dera Ismail Khan and Bakhar. According to details, a team comprising by Khurshid Alam, Director Finance and coordinator of Task Force for affectees, Deputy Director IRI, Mr. Muhammad Jamil, Principal librarian Muhammad Rafique, Deputy Directors Sports and Public Relations Syed Manzoor Hussain Shah and Syed Muzammil Hussain shah respectively, Assistant Director Dost Muhammad, Nusrat Hussain Department of Urdu and student of Software Syed Ghalib Hassan.

The Group distributed relief goods to over 200 families of those villages which were badly damaged by the flood in River Indus. In Bhakkar a delegation of local notables led by Mr. Iqbal Ghuncha Advocate also called on the IIUI delegation and appreciated universities’ effort for flood affectees.

Inauguration of Maryam Block at IIUI

Prof. Fateh Muhammad Malik, Rector, International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) inaugurated newly constructed block (Hazrat Maryam Block) at Female Campus of the university. Dr. Anwar Hussain Siddiqui President IIU, Mrs. Parveen Qadir Agha Vice President IIU, Faculty Members, Administrative Officers and a large number of students were also present on the occasion.

Prof. Fateh Muhammad Malik while speaking on the occasion said that the construction of the new block increased the space for female students. In addition to class rooms there are laboratories too, which have latest facilities at this block.

Dr. Anwar Hussain Siddiqui said that the university determined to provide state-of-Art facilities to its students especially female students. He added that a gymnasium for female students is also under construction and will be completed soon. He hoped that three more female hostels shall be constructed, when funds are released by the Govt. of Pakistan as promised by the prime minister at last convocation of the university.

The inauguration ceremony was also addressed by Mrs. Parveen Qadir Agha Vice President IIUI who said that foundation of this block was laid by Dr. Anwar Siddiqui thirty months back and he himself was able to see the block completed. Dr. Ehsan Ullah Khan Dean Faculty of Basic and Applied Sciences also addressed the gathering.
