Department of Computer Science

Welcome! On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students of the Department of Computer Science, I greet you! For Computer Scientists the current era is full of excitement and challenges as the discipline is now widely recognized to be an essential source of tools and techniques for advancements in nearly all spheres of human endeavor. Computer Science is a fascinating subject, and one that is now indispensable in our lives.

Almost every aspect of modern life involves computing – from mobile phones, TVs, planes, trains and cars, to gaming, security and medicine. Every organization’s payroll, customer records and finances are held electronically, sometimes containing millions and millions of records. The digital world is really upon us. Looking to the future, initiatives such as cloud computing will connect us all through small portable devices, enhancing social networking and allowing us to exchange audio and video data from our daily lives.

Keeping in mind the absolute dependence of the contemporary world requirements over Information technology the programs offered by the department are tailored towards producing computer scientists capable of achieving new heights in innovation and enhancement of technology to provide the world an even better tomorrow. Our programs are accredited by the Higher Education commission and to achieve excellence we strictly follow the standard curriculum guidelines as laid down by the HEC.

Through excellence in research, teaching, and service our dedicated faculty has distinguished itself in the core areas of computer science and in many related multi-disciplinary areas. We continue to stress diversity in our hiring – and strongly support the creation of a diverse workforce through our student recruiting and retention programs.

The future holds many challenges. The architecture of computers that we deal with everyday is changing: multi-core processors are here and are fast replacing the single-CPU/single-core desktop and laptop. Entertainment in the form of games, films, and music now relies heavily on high performance computing. Computer hardware and software pervades devices and equipment that we use every day and has thus become the primary source of flexible and varied functionality – and hence a key driver of the global economy. Projects of national and global importance in science and engineering seek computer science as an essential means for advancement and service. Our faculty and staff work tirelessly to provide flexible, attractive, and relevant education at the undergraduate and graduate levels to generate the workforce capable of meeting these varied challenges.

We welcome you to browse through the departmental web site. Whether you are a student, a parent, an alum, or a colleague, we want to hear from you. Your comments and suggestions will help us move to the next level and provide us with encouragement to maintain excellence.

About the Department
The Computer Sciences Department of IIUI was launched in the year 1992. Accredited by the National Computing Education Accreditation Council (NCEAC) the department is currently offering the following programs:
Since its inception the Department of Computer Science has been a center for research and education at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Strong research groups exist in areas of artificial intelligence, robotics, foundations of computer science, scientific computing, and systems. Basic work in computer science is the main research goal of these groups, but there is also a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research and on applications that stimulate basic research.

We take an experimental, scientific, approach to our subject, with an emphasis on the practical implementation of technology. Indeed, many technologies developed here have a continuing impact on all our lives, including the one that enables you to view this (or any other) website.

We are an open friendly Department, open to ideas and open to people. We enjoy the IIUI’s tradition of working across disciplinary boundaries. We ask questions and we challenge ideas. We believe in our subject and in its potential. Browse this site and find out more about us.
