IIUI ELS Session Highlights Philosophy as a Living Practice

The English Literary Society (ELS) of the Department of English, International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI), organized an academic session titled “Courage to Think and Question: Philosophy as the Practice of Life,” featuring scholar Mr. Peer Jan Umar as the guest speaker.

Addressing students and faculty, Mr. Peer Jan Umar emphasized the relevance of philosophy in contemporary life, particularly for students of literature. He encouraged the audience to view philosophy not as a purely abstract discipline but as an essential practice that shapes ethical thinking, self-awareness, and meaningful engagement with the world.

During the session, the speaker reflected on historical figures such as Socrates, Hypatia, Giordano Bruno, and Ibn al-Muqaffa, highlighting the personal sacrifices made by thinkers who challenged dominant ideas of their times. These examples were presented to underline the enduring link between intellectual courage and the pursuit of truth.

Mr. Peer Jan Umar also addressed common misconceptions surrounding philosophy, rejecting claims of its impracticality and distance from daily life. He explained that philosophical inquiry informs everyday decisions and can complement religious understanding by encouraging reasoned reflection rather than blind adherence.

The lecture concluded by defining philosophy as the love of wisdom, centered on questioning and self-discovery. A lively question-and-answer session followed, during which students discussed the relationship between philosophy, science, and career development. The speaker noted that philosophical training develops critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and effective communication skills.

The session was attended by a large number of students along with faculty members, including Dr. Muhammad Sheeraz Dasti and Mr. Syed Rashid Mehmood.
