One-day hands-on training workshop on “CRISPR/CAS9 Genome Editing” was organized by the Department of Biological Sciences.
Prof. Dr. Muhammad Amir Khan Director ORIC was the chief guest of the event, who appreciated the efforts of Department of Biological Sciences and emphasized that ORIC will facilitate to organize such important hands-on trainings for the students to equip them with these modern techniques.
Prof. Dr. Muhammad Irfan Khan, Dean Faculty of Sciences in his welcome address briefed about the importance of CRISPR/Cas9 Genome Editing as modern lab tool, which enables researchers to utilize genetically programmed animals to understand the cause of various diseases and to understand molecular mechanisms that can be explored for better therapeutic strategies.
Dr. Muhammad Ramzan Khan, Program Leader/Principle Scientific Officer at NIGAB, NARC, was the Resource Person. Dr. Shaheen Shahzad, Incharge Department of Biological Sciences was the event convener, with main organizers included Dr. Asma Gul, Incharge Faculty of Sciences, Dr. Asif Mir, Chairman DBS, Dr. Sania Zaib, Assistant Professor and M. Nouman Shahid, Deputy Director ORIC.
The trainers included Dr. Nazia Rehman (Senior Scientific Officer NIGAB, NARC), Safeena Inam (Scientific Officer NIGAB, NARC), and Samra Irum (Research Fellow NIGAB, NARC). Dr. Ramzan gave a comprehensive talk about CRISPR/Cas9 technique and its scope all over the world and especially in Pakistan. Then one of the trainers explained about the usage of various tools and software used for CRISPR/Cas9 technique. Lastly, Lab demonstrations were given to the participants of the workshop by the trainers in Genomics Research Lab at Female Campus, Department of Biological Sciences.
At the end Dr. Asif Mir, Chairman DBS thanked the Resource Person and the participants. Shields were distributed among the chief guest, resource person, trainers, and the participants were awarded with participation certificates.
