DEPT. OF POLITICS & IR, IIUI HOLDS WORKSHOP ON “NUCLEAR NON-PROLIFERATION ISSUES AND STRATEGIC STABILITY IN SOUTH ASIA

The Department of Politics and International Relations, Faculty of Social Sciences, FSS, International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) in collaboration with Student Advisor Office of university organized a workshop on “Nuclear Non-Proliferation Issues and Strategic Stability in South Asia” at Allama Iqbal Auditorium, Faisal Masjid Campus.

Dr. Manzoor Khan Afridi, Chairman, Department of Politics and I.R, FSS, IIUI highlighted the importance of nuclear learning for the students of Politics and I.R. The event was chaired by Professor, P&IR, Dr. Muhammad Khan. He discussed the significance of being a nuclear weapon state. He gave an overall overview of the workshop and also discussed the historical background of the nuclear development in South Asia, recent and future challenges.

Dr Zafar Nawaz Jaspal, Professor, School of Politics and International Relations, Quaid-I-Azam University, Islamabad talked about nuclear history, policy making, nuclear proliferation in the world, Indo-Pak nuclear policies, emerging threats and challenges. Ms. Huma Rehman who is Senior Research Fellow, Center for International Strategic Studies (CISS), gave a detailed presentation on the “Emerging Technologies, Arms Race and their Impact on Strategic Stability of South Asia”, in which she highlighted the challenges of modern technology and its impact on the strategic stability of south Asia.

Dr. Masood Ur Rehman Khattak, Faculty Member, Department of P&IR, IIUI apprised the students about “Doctrinal Transformation in the Indian Military: Challenges for the Deterrence Stability of South Asia.” He discussed the Indian military’s conventional doctrinal development and its impact on regional security specifically Pakistan.

Dr. Tauqeer Hussain Sargana, Faculty Member, Department of I.R, IIUI emphasized on the “Changing Dynamics of Deterrence in South Asia: An Interplay of Conventional and Nuclear Threshold”. His presentation evaluated the overall conventional and nuclear policy making issues in south Asia and their impact on Pakistan.

Ms. Saima Aman Sial, Senior Research Fellow at CISS   described in details about the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Regime: Challenges and Opportunities for Pakistan. Last but not least Dr. Ashfaq Ahmed, Assistant Professor, P&IR. University of Sargodha highlighted and brought under discussion very important issue, “Transformation of the Indian Nuclear Doctrine: From No First Use to First Use Policy”. In which he analyzed the Indian military’s First use policy and evaluated whether they can operationalise it or not.

At the end or workshop detailed in question/answer session speakers answered question of participants. At the end of the workshop Chairman Department of P&IR distributed souvenirs among the speakers and distributed certificates among students.
