Department of English Conducts Workshop Series on Writing and Research in the Age of AI

The English Literary Society of the Department of English (Male), International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI), organized a series of academic workshops from July 29 to 31, 2025, focusing on writing and research in the evolving age of Artificial Intelligence. The initiative was part of an ongoing skill-building program aimed at enhancing students’ academic writing, critical thinking, and digital literacy through practical and interactive sessions.

The three-day series began with a workshop titled “Basics of Research: From Topic to Term Paper”, led by Dr. Muhammad Sheeraz Dasti, Incharge of the Department. The session highlighted the importance of understanding the research process as a foundation for effective academic writing. Participants engaged in various activities based on examples drawn from literature and linguistics. The session also underscored the growing significance of technological competence in conducting research, particularly when dealing with real-life data.

The second session of the series, “Exploring the Role of Artificial Intelligence in Enhancing Language Learning and Writing Skills,” was conducted by Dr. Khalid Mahmood. The workshop familiarized participants with a range of AI tools, platforms, and models that support writing tasks, vocabulary building, pronunciation practice, and grammar improvement. The session introduced AI as a multifaceted aid in academic development, serving roles from ideation to editing.

Concluding the series, Dr. Arshad Mehmood Raja led a workshop titled “Structuring an Expository Essay.” He guided students through both the macro and micro structures of the five-paragraph essay, using relevant examples and hands-on exercises. The session demonstrated how the five-paragraph framework could be adapted for essays of varying lengths and complexities, offering students practical tools for organizing their writing effectively.

The workshop series reflected the department’s commitment to equipping students with contemporary academic skills and preparing them to navigate both traditional and technology-driven approaches to learning and research.
