ALUMNI LECTURES SERIES: NAZIR BROHI ADDRESSES AT DEPARTMENT OF LAW

Department of Law of the Faculty of Shariah and Law of the International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI), as part of its ‘Distinguished Alumni Lecture Series’, arranged a lecture of Mr. Nazir Brohi at the male campus.

Mr. Niaz Brohi is a proud alumnus of International Islamic University. He studied LL.B (Hons) and LL.M from IIU and had an experience of working with various telecom sector organisations. The notable affiliations include his work as Director Law and Regulations at Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (“PTA”), Longest serving Chief Legal Officer at JAZZ ( Mobilink) and Global Head of Legal at VEON Shared Services.

Mr.Brohi was the 1st Pakistani to serve on Jazz’s board as Executive Director. He  headed various Board committees as its chairman at JAZZ, Mobilink Microfinance Bank, DEODAR , LinkedDotNet and various other companies .

He has played vital role in the de-regulation of telecom sector in Pakistan. He had played important role in drafting telecom regulations and telecom licenses while at PTA and Merger of Warid and Jazz while at JAZZ.

In his talk he discussed the role of lawyers in a challenging technological world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and that how lawyers can continue remaining relevant and focused. He also highlighted important milestones of telecom sector deregulation in Pakistan with a note that investments made in this sector have been very promising and far higher than several traditional sectors of our economy.

Hence unprecedented employment generation has been witnessed in this sector. Mr. Brohi also raised the issue of privacy protection, foreign ownership of telecom operators, consumer protection concerns and mergers & acquisition regulations. He maintained that a conducive regulatory framework is instrumental in attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and Pakistan has been quite successful in this regard. He emphasized that next challenge is around 5G and Artificial Intelligence technologies and legal professionals will be required to transform their skills accordingly to keep themselves relevant.
