The Department of English, International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI), through its English Literary Society (ELS), organized an outdoor reading session titled “Books and Coffee” as part of the Turkish Week celebrations. The event also marked the inaugural session of the newly launched Book Club under ELS, aimed at nurturing a collective interest in reading and promoting thoughtful discussions among its members.
The session featured discussions on four Turkish short stories — “Muzaffar and Bananas,” “The Canary,” “All the Streets of the City,” and “Terrorist Upstairs.” Around 40 participants, including faculty members and students, attended the gathering.

Moderated by Sajar Shaukat, General Secretary of the Book Club, the event was attended by Dr. Fauzia Janjua, Dean; Dr. Saiyma, Head of Department; Dr. Rukhsana Tariq, Students’ Affairs Advisor; and Ms. Sidra Huma from the Media Department. Faculty Advisors Dr. Amal Sayyid and Ms. Sara Rashid, along with President, English Literary Society (ELS) Zurnash Nawaz and Vice Presidents Afifa Lateef and Mishkat Waheed, appreciated the efforts of ELS in fostering literary engagement among students.
Participants explored the theme of resistance depicted in the selected stories, reflecting on how the characters challenged social conventions through silence, individuality, and expression. The discussion also highlighted the linguistic and cultural richness of Turkish literature.

The outdoor setting, complemented by coffee and refreshments, provided an informal and engaging atmosphere that encouraged open dialogue. The IT and Logistics Committees extended support in arrangements and media coverage.
The event concluded with acknowledgment of the English Literary Society’s initiative in promoting a vibrant reading culture within the department. “Books and Coffee” successfully blended literary reflection with a sense of community and shared appreciation for literature.
