The Institute of Professional Development (IPD) at the International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) successfully conducted a full-day training workshop on Jolly Phonics on Tuesday, August 26, at the Allama Iqbal Auditorium, Faisal Mosque Campus, IIUI. The event aimed to equip educators with effective literacy techniques to enhance early years education.
The session opened with Dr. Fouzia Ajmal, Consultant at IPD, who welcomed around 90 participating teachers and coordinators from IIUI and other institutions. She emphasized the critical role of quality literacy programs in building strong foundational skills among young learners. The training was led by Ms. Erum Tehreem, a certified Jolly Learning Trainer, who introduced participants to synthetic phonics, including the 42 letter sounds of Jolly Phonics, blending, segmenting, tricky words, and multisensory teaching methods. Attendees also explored digital classroom resources and practical strategies to integrate phonics instruction effectively.
The interactive workshop featured demonstrations, group activities, hands-on practice, and reflection exercises, allowing educators to experience the Jolly Phonics methodology directly. Participants praised the practical insights gained and expressed enthusiasm about implementing these strategies in their classrooms.
At the closing ceremony, Professor Dr. Nadeem Ahmed Sheikh, Director of IPD-IIUI, highlighted the institute’s dedication to advancing quality professional development for teachers, particularly in early childhood education. “This training underscores our commitment to strengthening foundational learning through innovative teaching methods,” he stated. Dr. Sheikh awarded certificates to participants, encouraging them to apply the new skills to improve literacy outcomes for young students.
