IIUI Hosts Two-Day Workshop on Genomic Research Techniques

The Department of Biological Sciences, International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI), organized a two-day hands-on training workshop on genomic research techniques to enhance theoretical knowledge and laboratory skills of students in key areas of modern genetic research.

The workshop featured sessions by Dr. Shaheen, Dr. Ifrah, and Dr. Robina Khan, who guided participants through various genomic procedures. On Day 1, participants received theoretical orientation on DNA isolation methods, Gel Electrophoresis, Primer Designing, and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), followed by practical demonstrations. Under the supervision of Dr. Shaheen, students practiced phlebotomy and DNA extraction from blood samples.

Day 2 included further training on primer design and PCR techniques. Dr. Robina Khan led the session on Gel Electrophoresis, while Dr. Ifrah demonstrated PCR procedures and discussed primer reconstitution and mastermix preparation.

Prof. Dr. Asif Mir, Chairman of the Department, highlighted the relevance of genomic research in biotechnology and encouraged students to strengthen their foundation in these techniques.

The workshop concluded with a closing ceremony. Dr. Rukhsana Tariq, Students’ Advisor, as chief guest, appreciated the initiative and urged students to equip themselves with practical skills to meet current scientific challenges. Certificates were distributed among participants.

Dr. Shaheen Shahzad, Incharge of the Department and Chief Organizer, emphasized the value of such trainings in building students’ research capacity. The department acknowledged the contributions of all facilitators and participants in making the workshop a productive experience.
