DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS ORGANIZED A ONE DAY WORKSHOP ON OPTICS

The Committee for Scientific, Social and Media Activities of the Department of Physics, Faculty of Sciences of International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) organized a one day workshop on Optics for its BS/MS/PhD male students in Auditorium, Block II (Ibne Khuldoon).

It was attended by around 150 students of the Department of Physics. The objective of the workshop was to enable the students to learn about latest trends in Optics. It Illuminated young minds with light and Active Learning in Optics. The workshop was based on the familiarization of experimental and theoretical aspects of optics, allowing students of BS Physics to obtain hands-on experiences with optical equipment through experiments such as Total Internal Reflection, Single and Double Slit, Scattering and Polarization.

Resource person of the workshop Dr. Imrana Ashraf who has cooperated with International Center for theoretical Physics, Italy (ICTP) for many years, known in the optics world not only for the quality of her research. Dr. Imrana Ashraf is one of the first women to win the ICO/ICTP Prize in optics but also for her passion to share her knowledge with others.

During the workshop Dr. Imrnana shared her views on “Light and its Technology in our Life” and engaged students by interactive questions and answers in the session. In another session she demonstrated a number of simple experiments consisting of 3D imaging, polarization, Diffraction, Different Source of Light Properties and Scattering of Light Laws of Geometrical Optics, Demonstration of Swapping Arrow Miraj Effect and Superior Mraj Working Principle of Fiber Optic Communication Measuring Stress with Polarizers, Single and Double Slit Experiment. The students remained interactive for each activity due to interesting observations.

Around 15 BS/MS students were selected during the workshop to engage with speaker and ask questions in optics related experiments. At the end the chairperson Dr. Shaista Shehzada thanked speaker for her valuable time and encouraged students to come forward for their innovative ideas about Physics or any social activity.
