MS leading to PhD English

  

The Ph.D. (English) programme is envisaged as a three (3) years course.
 
It will be divided into the following components:
(a) One (1) year, or two semesters of 5 months duration each of Taught Courses equaling 30 credits in all.
(b) One (1) year of Research / Thesis work, equaling 20 credits in all, for M. Phil Degree
(c) Two years of Research / Thesis work, equaling 40 credits, in all for Ph.D. degree.
 
Eligibility for MS/Ph.D. programme in English Literature/Linguistics
1 M.S. English from this university with a minimum GPA 2.5/4.00 or equivalent or equivalent qualification from any other university with 2nd class with 45% minimum marks.
2 Those in job will have to produce NOC from their parent department.
 
Eligibility for Direct Enrollment in Ph.D. programme
1 M.Phil/MS from other universities will be preferred for Ph.D. admission.
2 Teaching Experience and 3 years at graduate or postgraduate level or 2 publications (national / international)
3 Foreign equivalent qualifications
4 Those who achieve 3.0 GPA or above at the end of coursework of M. Phil will be considered for direct registration for Ph.D. thesis.
5 Those in job will have to produce NOC from their parent department.

Dissertation / Thesis Research Work
 
M. Phil students will have to work over a minimum of two (2) semesters in writing an original research dissertation / thesis of at least 25,000-30,000 words (including annexures, appendices etc) in an area of their specialization, duly approved, of total weightage of 20 credits.
 
Ph.D. students will have to work over a minimum of four (4) semesters in writing an original research dissertation / thesis ranging from 30,000-120,000 words (including annexures, appendices etc) in an area of their specialization, duly approved, of total weightage of 40 credits.
 
The students will have to finalise a viable research proposal in collaboration with one of the appointed research advisers by the 2nd semester and submit it for consideration by the Research Committee. Thereafter, if the proposal is accepted following a detailed interview of the student by the committee, the research work may then be commenced in regular contact with the appointed adviser. Ultimately, the research will have to be presented before an Examination Committee / Panel for Viva Voce defence and eventual finalization in line with its recommendations.
