MISSION
The mission of the department is:

“To create learning environment for students through theoretical understanding and practical implementation, inculcating real world knowledge and equipping with advanced tools and professional skills, so that graduates can take on future challenges and serve humanity as per Islamic values ”.

INTRODUCTION

The Department of Civil Engineering (DCE) is one of three departments at the Faculty of Engineering & Technology (FET) in International Islamic University (IIU), Islamabad. In 2014, the DCE was approved by the Board of Governors and Academic Council. With an approval from Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC), Bachelor of Sciences (BS) in Civil Engineering program started w. e. f. Fall Semester in September 2014. Currently, the curriculum is based on the Outcome-based Education (OBE), which is in line with the requirements of PEC and Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan. The core focus areas in the curriculum of Civil Engineering at DCE is the sound understanding of engineering knowledge, effective communication, the application of modern engineering tools and preparing students to acquire long life learning.

At the completion of Civil Engineering program, our graduates will be well equipped to implement the Civil Engineering knowledge transferred through our problem-based learning and hands-on teaching method, demonstrate solving of complex problems and team working skills, which will enable them to be employed by different organizations. Our graduates will also be able to exhibit leadership skills in the field as well as maintain ethical values of professional practice. Moreover, the equilibrium is created in the theoretical and practical knowledge of Civil Engineering with the induction of highly experienced and qualified faculty members having enough research and field experiences.

PROGRAM EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES (PEOs)

The Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) for BS in Civil Engineering program reflect the mission of the Department of Civil Engineering (DCE). The aim of the program is to produce Civil Engineers with following attributes within a few years of graduation:

PEO-01:
The graduates implement technical knowledge and skills to play effective role in the Civil Engineering Profession.

PEO-02:
The graduates demonstrate teamwork and interpersonal skills to contribute efficiently in multi-disciplinary projects.

PEO-03:
The graduates exhibit continual professional development to enhance their expertise in relevant field.

PEO-04:
The graduates undertake ethical professional practice and work for the benefit of the society.

PROGRAM LEARNING OBJECTIVES (PLOs)

The PLOs are the central organizing feature of student learning, which are developed from the complex interaction of a range of competing and complementary factors. They describe the skills and knowledge a student is expected to attain upon completion of degree program. The DCE has adopted twelve PLOs, which are controlled through the curriculum. The courses of BS Civil Engineering program are mapped to thoroughly cover these PLOs. The PLOs of the DCE are given below.

PLO-01: Engineering Knowledge
An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems

PLO-02: Problem Analysis
An ability to identify, formulate, research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering sciences

PLO-03: Design/Development of Solutions
An ability to design solutions for complex engineering problems and design systems, components or processes that meet specified needs with appropriate consideration for public health and safety, cultural, societal, and environmental considerations

PLO-04: Investigation
An ability to investigate complex engineering problems in a methodical way including literature survey, design and conduct of experiments, analysis and interpretation of experimental data, and synthesis of information to derive valid conclusions

PLO-05: Modern Tool Usage
An ability to create, select and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools, including prediction and modeling, to complex engineering activities, with an understanding of the limitations

PLO-06: The Engineer and Society
An ability to apply reasoning informed by contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to professional engineering practice and solution to complex engineering problems

PLO-07: Environment and Sustainability
An ability to understand the impact of professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts and demonstrate knowledge of and need for sustainable development

PLO-08: Ethics
Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of engineering practice

PLO-09: Individual and Teamwork
An ability to work effectively, as an individual or in a team, on multifaceted and/or multidisciplinary settings

PLO-10: Communication
An ability to communicate effectively, orally as well as in writing, on complex engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions

PLO-11: Project Management
An ability to demonstrate management skills and apply engineering principles to one’s own work, as a member and/or leader in a team, to manage projects in a multidisciplinary environment

PLO-12: Lifelong Learning
An ability to recognize the need for, and have the preparation and ability to engage in, independent and life-long learning in the broadest context of technological change.
