IIUI Holds Seminar on Climate Change and Water Conservation, Oath-Taking of Green Youth Movement Club Conducted

A seminar on climate change and water conservation was organized at the International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI), jointly arranged by the Directorate of Student Affairs (Male and Female) in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Science (Male and Female) and the Green Youth Movement Clubs of both campuses. The event highlighted key environmental challenges faced by Pakistan and was held alongside the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected cabinet of the Green Youth Movement Club.

The seminar commenced with opening remarks by Dr. Hafiz Ghufran Ahmed, Student Advisor and Focal Person of the Green Youth Movement Club, Male Campus, who outlined the purpose of the session and emphasized the importance of student engagement in addressing climate and water-related issues.

Three guest speakers addressed the seminar, including Dr. Amir Haider Malik, Research Associate at COMSATS University Islamabad; Ms. Huma Amjad, climate change expert and CEO and Founder of Jatalla Consultancy; and Dr. Awais Siraj, Member of the Implementation and Evaluation Team of the Uraan Pakistan Programme. The speakers discussed water scarcity in Pakistan, its causes and long-term impacts on agriculture, the economy, and everyday life. They also highlighted the country’s limited water storage capacity, the role of existing dams, and the need for developing new reservoirs as part of sustainable water management planning.

Following the seminar, the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected cabinet of the Green Youth Movement Club was conducted by Dr. Sarah Amir, Focal Person of the Club for both male and female campuses. The newly elected members pledged to actively contribute to environmental sustainability and promote youth-led climate initiatives.

The current cabinet includes Izma Ashar and Irfan Ali as Captains; Faiza Batool and Hamza Zakir as Vice Captains; Aman Binte Liaquat and Muhammad Ahmed as Thematic Leads for Forest; Huda Zehra and Mirza Moiz as Thematic Leads for Solid Waste; Huda Sohail and Touseef Raza as Communication Leads; Minha Zia as General Secretary; Jaweria Tariq as Joint Secretary and Vice Captain; Natasha Tariq as Finance Secretary; Tuba Sharif as Stage Secretary; Muznah Imran as Record Keeper; and Samana Batool as Media Lead.

The outgoing cabinet comprised Mehreen Fatima as Captain; Hajra Noor Khalid as Vice Captain; Samar Fatima as Thematic Lead Forest; Arooj Ali as Thematic Lead Solid Waste; Ayesha Zakir as Communication Lead; and Sabahat Nosheen as Stage Secretary. Appreciation certificates and recommendation letters were distributed among the outgoing cabinet members and active female campus team members in recognition of their services during the 2023–2025 tenure.

Dean Faculty of Sciences, Dr. Mushtaq Ahmed, also addressed the audience, stressing responsible water usage, the role of academic research, and youth participation in addressing Pakistan’s water challenges. Shields were presented to the guest speakers, followed by a vote of thanks by Dr. Syeda Maria Ali, Chairperson, Department of Environmental Science.

The event also marked the fourth anniversary of the Green Youth Movement Club with a cake-cutting ceremony, reflecting four years of student-led environmental advocacy. Under the initiative of the Department of Environmental Science, reusable shopping bags were distributed among participants to encourage sustainable lifestyle practices. The seminar reinforced the role of youth in promoting environmental responsibility and advancing climate action at the university and beyond.
