The Faculty of Usuluddin (Islamic Studies) was established in 1981. The Faculty of Usuluddin (Islamic Studies) is one of the pioneer teaching units of IIUI and as such has a leading role in achieving the objectives for which this international seat of Islamic learning was established. The faculty of the rapidly growing international Islamic University and it truly epitomizes both its attributes i.e. international and Islamic. The faculty members come from different Arab & non Arab Countries with Highest degrees from leading Islamic universities in the Muslim world. The Language of instruction is both English & Arabic with a view that all course related to Islam must be studied from their original sources and original language so that the students gets first hand knowledge of his/her area of study .
Academic Activities and Programs of Faculty of Usuluddin (Islamic Studies)
The Faculty offers specialization in six major areas (1) Tafseer and Qur’anic Sciences, (2), Hadith and Its Sciences, (3) Aqeedah and Philosophy, (4) Comparative Religions, (5) Dawah & Islamic Culture, (6) Seerah and Islamic History. The first degree is BS (B.A. Hons) Islamic Studies (Usuluddin) which spans over eight semesters an all the departments. The MS (M.Phil) consists of a two semesters course work after successfully completing the prescribed preparatory course work if any. Seven specializations are offered in the MS degree, viz; Tafseer and Qur’anic Sciences; Hadith and Its Sciences; Aqeedah and Philosophy; Comparative Religions; Dawah & Islamic Culture; Seerah; Islamic History. A dissertation has to be written after successful completion of the course work. The Ph.D program is in Islamic Studies (Usuluddin) in four different specializations: Tafseer and Qur’anic Sciences; Hadith and Its Sciences; Aqeedah and Philosophy; Comparative Religions. The Ph.D program in the remaining areas of specialization shall be launched soon.
The Faculty not only undertakes instruction leading to the above-mentioned degrees but also serves the entire University by conducting courses related to Islamic Studies. For fresh entrants it arranges the foundation courses and for other teaching and research units it provides courses in fundamentals of Islam, without which no degree program is completed and no degree can be awarded.
The 4 years BS degree is very comprehensive. The final product comes up with a thorough study of Qur’anic exegesis, Qur’anic sciences, Tajweed-ul-Qur’an, Qira’at, Hadith, Hadith sciences, Seerah, Islamic history, Fiqh, Logic, Kalam, Philosophy, Sufism, Dawah (preaching of Islam). To widen the knowledge base of students, courses are offered in such varied fields as Islamic History and Civilization, Modern Islamic Movements, History of Human Thoughts, Islamic Institutions, Muslim Communities, World Religions, comparative Religions, Sufism, Ethics, Islamic Jurisprudence, and topics in Sociology and Psychology. The BS programs include University requirement, Faculty requirements and department requirements. The students after 5 common semesters with 90 credit hours choose an area of specialization from amongst the six departments and continue their studies for a further semester to complete their BS programs..
The purpose of MS and Ph.D. programs is specialization in a particular field with extended knowledge of many. The extent of knowledge of the holder of a MS and Ph.D. degree can be judged from the varied semester programs which include courses on Qur’anic Sciences, Hadith Sciences, Methodology of Tafseer, Analytical Tafseer, Methodology of Hadith, Aqeedah, Philosophy, Research Methodology, Principles of Dawah, History of Religion etc…
