SEMINAR ON IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON WATER RESOURCES OF PAKISTAN HELD AT FC

Directorate of Student Affairs, Female Campus (FC) of International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) and The Green Youth Movement Club (GYM club) led by Dr. Sarah Amir, along with her students from the Environmental Science Department organized an awareness seminar under the topic of “Impact of climate change on water resources of Pakistan”. The seminar included known speakers from the International Islamic University, the Ministry of Climate Change, and PCRWR.

In his inaugural Address Dr. Ayaz Afsar Vice President of Academics, at IIUI, appreciated the efforts of the GYM club and highlighted the effects of climate change on precipitation patterns in Pakistan. Dr. Hifza Rashid, Director General, PCRWR was one of the two guests to share her knowledge on the said topic. She emphasized climate change and its effects and how Pakistan is in dire need of policy instruments due to its economy being water intensive. Moreover, she shed light on the importance of individual contributions towards combatting climate change.

Dr. Shaukat Ali, SSO, Ministry of Climate Change applauded the research work of female students from the Department of Environmental Science and repeatedly appreciated their work. Talking on the topic of the impacts of climate change, he discussed Pakistan’s standing on the global risk index and the status of our freshwater resources including glaciers. “Temperature rise in Pakistan will occur 10 years earlier than the rest of the globe”, an astonishing prediction made by Dr. Shaukat Ali. Dean, Faculty of Sciences, Dr. Muhammad Irfan Khan shared his thoughts on the topic towards the conclusion of the seminar stating that climate change is a non-traditional security threat to Pakistan and negatively impacts water, food, and disaster risk security. As a token of appreciation shields were presented to the honorable guests from MoCC Dr. Shaukat Ali and PCRWR Dr. Hifza Rashid, Dean Faculty of Sciences, Dr. Muhammad Irfan Khan, Vice President Academics Dr. Ayaz Afsar and Dr. Sarah Amir for her undeniable efforts to make GYM club, IIUI one of the most active green youth club amongst all universities in the region.

This was followed by certificate distribution to the cabinet members and organizers of the seminar. The seminar ended with cake cutting ceremony to celebrate the first anniversary of the Green Youth Movement Club, IIUI and vote of thanks by Dr. Sumayyah Chughtai.
