DEPT OF PHYSICS SEMINAR ORGANIZES SEMINAR ON HIGH PERFORMANCE NANOSTRUCTURES DEVICES
Report By: Muhammad Nauman
Laboratory of Nanoscience and Technology (LNT), Department of Physics arranged a seminar on high performance nanostructures devices here at male campus in Faculty of Basic and Applied Sciences (FBAS).

The seminar was addressed by Prof. Dr. Yong Lei, while it was chaired by Prof. Dr. Abdul Hameed Director ORIC IIU. Chief organizer of the event, Dr. Javed Iqbal Saggu, students of BS, MSc, MS, Ph.D and faculty members also attended the event.

Prof. Dr. Yong Lei, who is group leader of 3D Nanostructuring at Technical University, Ilmenau, Germany, presented his latest work on the 3D nanostructures synthesis as well as their novel applications. He has also published over 150 highly indexed research papers.

In his seminar, he talked that most surface patterns are 2D planar structures with low lateral dimension. The surface areas of these patterns are similar to those of thin films on substrates. Thus one of the most attractive features of nano-materials, extremely large surface area, is missing. Moreover, the only way to increase the pattern density of 2D surface patterns is to decrease the pattern size and spacing. All these largely limit the applications of surface nanostructures, especially in many applications where large surface area and high pattern density are desirable. Therefore, the realization of 3D nanostructures on substrates is a very important challenge in the nano-technology field. The usage of 3D Nanostructures for the production of supercapacitors and to replace the Li-ion battery was of utmost attraction to the students as well as to the faculty members.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Javed Saggu thanked the speaker for taking out the time from his busy schedule to update the knowledge of participants about new techniques and novel research activity in field of nanotechnology. Dr. Saggu also thanked the security sections of NCP and (M. Ismail) IIUI for facilitating the movement of the state guest for the event.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Yong Lei joined in a tea with the faculty members of Department of Physics. He also visited the laboratories of the Department and appreciated the work being done especially in the Laboratory of Nanoscience andTechnology (LNT) under supervision of Dr. Saggu.
