Chairman’s Message

The Department of Politics and International Relations is one of the leading departments of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the International Islamic University, situated at Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan. The Department offers both undergraduate and graduate programs in various specialties of political science and international relations. It has a highly qualified faculty which has attracted students from all over the world. Department provides an invigorating academic environment conducive to learning. Being an Islamic University, students are imbibed with required Islamic values for attaining academic excellence. Students of the Department of Politics & I.R are offered a full-range of courses in the disciplines of Political Science and International Relations.

Brief History
The foundation of the Islamic University, Islamabad, was laid on 11 November 1980 and was reconstituted as ‘International Islamic University’ in 1985. The Department of Politics & International Relations was set up in 2001 offering MA and Ph. D programs. It has been offering M.S leading to Ph.D Programs since Fall Semester 2006, and 4-year BS (Hon’s) in Politics & International Relations programs commences from the Fall Semester 2007. It is a mixed program of the disciplines of Political Science and International Relations. Keeping in view the requirements of the International Islamic Universities, the Department provides its students with modern knowledge along with sound and strong Islamic components, because it is convinced that education must go in consonance with Islamic values, morality and ethics.

Objectives
To familiarize students with emerging trends in the disciplines of Political Science and International Relations. To comprehend various issues in the region, contemporary world politics and foreign policy issues. To provide training that would enable students to make a significant contribution in the future.

Vision
Cater to the educational needs of future leaders in the national government, civil society institutions and international organizations. The Department strives to provide the highest quality education to the students.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

  • FOUR YEAR B.S. (HON’S) IN POLITICS & INTERNATIONAL RELATION (EIGHT SEMESTER PROGRAMS):

Requirement for Admission: (Eligibility)

The admission requirement of Bachelor Honors (B.S. Hon’s) program is at least aggregate Grade “C” (50% or above marks without N.C.C) from Boards of Intermediate & Secondary Education of Pakistan or any other recognized Institutions. The admission procedures include an admission test.

  • M.A IN POLITICS & INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

Requirements for Admission: (Eligibility)

Holders of Bachelors degree in political science/ International Relations/ Economics with minimum CGPA 2.00/4.00 in semester system or 50% marks annual system. The admission procedures include and admission test and interview.

Scheme of Study

  • Two year program (four semesters)
  • The courses of the first & second semesters are compulsory
  • The courses of the third (except Arabic-III which is compulsory) & fourth semesters are electives and are offered according to availability of teacher. The student is required to take six courses in each of the two semesters.
  • Substitute courses are offered to graduates of IIU only. New students are required to complete UR courses of Arabic and Islamic Studies.
  • The writing of a thesis is optional.

  • M.S IN POLITICS & INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

Requirement of Admission: (Eligibility)
M.A/B.S (4-year) in Political Science/ International Relations/ Defense & Strategic Studies with at least 2.50/4.00 CGPA in Semester System or 1st Division at least with 60 % marks in Annual System from a recognized University. NTS/GAT (General) with 50% is required before applying for admission. Department will conduct admission test and interview for eligible candidates.

Program Contents:
The Program content of 30 credit hours comprises:

  • Two-Three year program
  • Program is designed in accordance with the HEC requirements
  • Coursework: The curriculum consists of introductory courses and a variety of specialized courses of 24 credit hours
  • Dissertation writing of 06 credit hours
  • DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN POLITICS AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

Requirement of Admission: (Eligibility) to Ph.D. Program according to HEC Criteria

MS/M.Phil Political Science/ International Relations/ Defense & Strategic Studies with minimum CGPA 3.00/4.00 in semester system or first division (65% marks) in annual system. NTS/GAT (General) with 50% is required before applying for admission. Department will conduct admission test and interview for eligible candidates.

Scheme of Study

  • Three-Five year program
  • Ph.D. Program is designed in accordance with the HEC requirements.
  • Ph. D Program consists of 54 credit hours out of which 18 credit hours of coursework and 36 credit hours of Dissertation.
  • Core courses are compulsory. Three elective courses may be offered from the remaining courses.
  • The students are required to take three courses each in 1st and 2nd semester
